The global apathy towards COVID

Towards the end of 2019, I landed my dream job abroad. In an omen, I became very ill a week before I was supposed to fly home, where I had planned to take an extended holiday before another move. In early 2020, I landed back in London. I didn’t know…

Where is your solidarity now Iran bleeds?

On September 16, Mahsa Amini died three days after being arrested and detained by Iran’s “morality police”. The death of the 22-year-old woman has sparked ongoing protests and demonstrations across the country that have since spread across the world. Under Iran’s Islamic (sharia) law imposed after the 1979 revolution, it…

sunflowers rise against the sky

in a homeless house feet shuffling towards clouded air suspended in a vessel of regret perched diagonal to the end of all paths keys on chain-dangled soul opening doors of only the mind now angel smoke in tired confinement breathed into burned holes in lungs heard only by jagged edged shadows congealed around a tired heart drinking darkness until carrying sunflowers on his head, leaves wilting snapped raw at the stalk as my heart cracked inside my chest the last eternal sunset a sky flooded with beacons signalling hoping your way home to a place of love you only deserved and could never find on earth

Fairytales aren’t ploys to brainwash young girls into the patriarchy

It’s become commonplace to hit out at the concept of fairytales as brainwashing little girls into the idea of Prince Charming, marriage, and the sacrifice of female identity into the patriarchy. I grew up on the Disney classics, the ones that would soon require some Blu-ray restoration, as I suspect…

Telling other women what to do isn’t feminism

When did feminism become a battle to be the most self-righteous rather than a battle for equality, freedom, choice? There are those who, under the umbrella of feminist women’s rights, think they know what’s better for other women and tell women that their right to choose means they should choose…

The Ukraine crisis has revealed the Western ideal of the deserving refugee

Under the guise of mourning something the West like to call ‘civilization’, the utterly uncivilized coverage of the Ukraine-Russia crisis is a shameful representation of the West’s failure to recognize racial bias when reporting on and reacting to war. They seem so like us. That’s what makes it so shocking. …

The hypocritical language of conflict

Words like “civilisation”, “primitive”, and “developed” lose their anthropological value and importance when charged with the emotive bias of political or journalistic agendas. “Primitive” is associated with technological progress, with societies primarily centred around kinship and custom; it has instead come to refer to a place that lacks democracy, Netflix…

Women’s bodies are basically irrelevant

…because aren’t they more or less just men anyway, apart from that thing they do every month? Six months ago, the New York Times published an opinion piece about why we didn’t know much, if anything, about the impact of the COVID-19 vaccines on women’s menstrual cycles. …

The True Heartbreak of Euro 2020

The biggest disappointment of Italy v England was not England losing the trophy — it was the loss of morality. Harry Kane wore a pride flag armband. The whole team took the knee. In the lead up to the match, Gareth Southgate said, “Our drive to the stadium was an…
